Q: "What is Web Hosting?" |
 |
A: "Space to store your website & email." |
| |
Every website needs to be stored somewhere so that people can access it on the internet. The easiest way to do this is to rent space from your host Salt Space.
To use your own professional-looking email address such as you@yourbusiness.com.au, hosting is required to store your emails, and a domain needs to be registered.
|
| |
Q: "What is a Domain?" |
 |
A: "The unique web address for people to find your website on the internet" |
| |
For example www.saltprint.com.au is the domain used for people to visit Saltprint. Domains are registered for a period of 12 months.
Registering your own domain also allows you to use a professional looking email address, such as you@yourbusiness.com.au. This also requires hosting.

| |
Q: "What is a website?" |
 |
A: "A bunch of files that are stored in your hosting space." |
| |
When you buy a domain & hosting, then the next step is to create a website to upload to your hosting space.
Your website might consist of a single web page that provides your business contact details, or it could be a dynamic e-commerce website with hundreds of pages. You can make your own website, or get Saltmedia to create a website for you.
Ordering hosting from Salt Space does not include a website.

Q: "Can I make my own website?" |
 |
A: "Yes, but make sure you know your stuff." |
| |
You can make your own website and upload it to your Salt Space hosting. Note that this can be a little tricky if you're a newbie. Salt will provide support when it comes to your hosting, but not in making your DIY website work.
Saltmedia can create your website for you. Talk to them about your ideas, and they will give you a quote.

Q: "When should I register my domain?" |
 |
A: "Before you print your business cards." |
| |
To save yourself the cost & time of reprinting your business cards later, register your domain now. Domain names aren't always available, and you don't want someone else to register your preferred domain name before you do.
Get your domain and email sorted while your cards are being printed. You can always create your website later.

| |
Q: "Should I register a '.com.au' or '.com'." |
 |
A: " '.com.au' is best for Australian customers, '.com' is best for international customers. |
| |
It's a personal thing, and you can choose which ever domain suits you. Most Australian online customers trust a ".com.au" domain more than a ".com", even if the website "website.com" is fully Australian.
If your website customers are international, it may be better to register a ".com" or even a country specific domain. Some international laws may apply to certain domains.
If the domains are available, you can register both ".com.au" and ".com" domains.

| |
Q: "How much hosting space do I need?" |
 |
A: "This depends on the size of your website." |
| |
Salt Space's Small Business Saver deal has a whopping 1.0Gb of space, which is more than plenty for just about all small business websites and email needs.
If you plan to store lots of big files like images or videos, then our larger Hosting Spaces will be suitable. See our prices here.
